Your Step-by-Step Watercolor Guide for Beginners

Watercolor painting is a popular and rewarding hobby that can be enjoyed by people of all ages and skill levels. If you're interested in starting to paint in watercolor, here's a step-by-step guide to get you started:

  1. Gather your materials: The first thing you'll need to do is gather the materials you'll need for your watercolor painting. Some of the basic materials you'll need include:

  • Watercolor paints: Watercolor paints are available in tubes or pans, and come in a range of colors. You can choose a basic set of colors to start with, or select individual colors to build your own set. My suggestion is to start with the primary colors in warm and cool. Red light and alizarin crimson, cerulean blue and ultramarine blue, lemon yellow and yellow deep. Add burnt sienna and yellow ochre for convenience.

  • Watercolor paper: Watercolor paper is specially designed to absorb and retain the paint, and is available in a range of sizes and textures. Look for paper that is at least 140 lb (300 gsm) weight, as this will be more durable and able to withstand the wetness of the paint.

  • Brushes: Watercolor brushes come in a range of shapes, sizes, and materials. Look for brushes with synthetic bristles, as these are more resistant to water and wear. You'll want to start with a few basic shapes, such as round, flat, and pointed.

  • Watercolor palette: A watercolor palette is a flat tray with wells for holding the paint. You can use a palette with a built-in mixing area, or a separate palette for mixing.

  • Water container: You'll need a container for holding water to rinse your brushes and mix with the paint.

2. Understand the properties of watercolor: Watercolor is a transparent medium, which means that the paint is applied in thin, transparent layers that allow the white of the paper to show through. This can make it challenging to cover up mistakes, but it also allows for a range of luminous, layered effects. Watercolor is also a wet-on-wet medium, which means that the paint is applied to wet paper and allowed to blend and spread on its own. This can produce some unexpected and spontaneous effects, but it also requires a bit of planning and control.

3. Practice basic techniques: There are a few basic techniques that you'll want to practice to get started with watercolor painting. These include wet-on-wet blending, dry brush, and layering. Wet-on-wet blending involves applying wet paint to wet paper and allowing the paint to spread and blend on its own. Dry brush involves loading a dry brush with paint and applying it to dry paper, creating a textured, dry effect. Layering involves applying thin layers of transparent paint over one another to create depth and luminosity.

4. Experiment with color: Watercolor allows for a wide range of color mixing and blending, so take some time to experiment with different color combinations and see what effects you can achieve. You can mix colors directly on the palette or on the paper, and you can create a range of shades and tints by adding water to the paint.

5. Start small: It can be tempting to jump right in and try to create a large, detailed painting, but it's often best to start small and work your way up. Begin with simple subjects, such as a still life or landscape, and focus on getting the basic techniques down before tackling more complex subjects.

Benefits of watercolor painting:Relaxation: Painting in watercolor can be a relaxing and enjoyable activity that allows you to forget about your daily stressors and focus on the present moment.

Creativity: Watercolor painting can be a creative outlet that allows you to express yourself and explore new ideas and techniques.
