20 Artist Hacks for More Creativity

Creative block takes many forms. Boredom or simply frustration and lack of motivation all point to one thing. A block to your creative process. If you can work through this it often means a step-up to new successful ventures. Here a re a few ways to make this breakthrough happen faster.
  1. Prepare for inspiration by doing the mundane. Tasks like priming the canvases, sweeping the studio or cleaning brushes lead to action. The bonus is that you will be ready for it!
  2. Turn off the TV. It will waste your time and dull your senses. Any other gadget that wastes your time? Same thing.
  3. Declutter. Even for ten minutes. Clear a desk. Throw away empty paint tubes. Unused boxes and stuff you are keeping in case you need it. Clutter  blocks energy. This has a real influence on your creativity.
  4. Let others inspire you. Do you have any uber-creative friends or mentors? If not find someone in books or online that inspires you. Yes seek inspiration from others who have it in spades and feel that energy. Put it into action.
  5. Bribe yourself. Promise yourself a treat if you complete a project. A new book to read if you finish the painting. Watch the DVD once you complete writing that chapter and so on.
  6. Use lists. Some people like lists. If this works for you then put your task on the list. "Start painting today" then put in the mundane items. Always include your creative task with the other to do items. Keep the list short. Three main items a day. Anything else is a bonus but OK to leave off.
  7. Make someone's day. Giving is better than receiving. It fills you with energy and this leads to creativity. Give a small gift of your art. Help someone. Pay it forward. Whatever gives you a feel-good charge of energy.
  8. Exercise. Walks, biking, dancing or whatever makes you move. Best done outdoors. I enjoy a walk on the beach and climbing the tallest dune. The view is amazing and the exercise gets the creative mood going.
  9. Music. Listening to music may work for you. Music does influence emotions so try something that makes you happy.
  10. Simplify. Clear your day if there are too many demands to meet. Simplify your life? Toxic situations in your life? Move on. Life is too short.
  11.  Try something new. Maybe you are stuck with a certain technique because it sells? Try something different for fun and see where it leads.
  12. Travel. Whether far or near. New sights and experiences stimulate the creative energy. Be open to experience these new things.
  13. Talk to other artists. Everyone can share their ideas and experiences. You are not alone.
  14. Play Hooky! Maybe you need to take some time off. This treat can give you the spark you need. Plus a little guilt will get you working harder.
  15. Meditate. The noise of everyday life can get too much. Step away and breathe using basic meditation techniques. Find a peaceful place with no interruptions.
  16. Free Doodle. Using any materials without any plan. Just draw or paint big shapes. Loose and free. Be open to ideas as they come forward on their own.
  17. Visualise. See what you want and you will set the process in motion. This is a powerful method and will help you take the next step whatever it may be.
  18. Journal.. Write your daily thoughts. Illustrate them them is possible too. Simply putting your thoughts on paper is a way of clearing mental clutter.
  19. Start a Mood Board. Preferably the analog version. Pinterest is okay, but it is too easy on its own. A physical board will engage you more deeply.
  20. Start! Taking action, whatever that may mean for you, creates its own momentum. Once you get moving the inspiration will start flowing again.
