How to Add Light to Your Landscape Paintings: DVD

Without light the landscape painting cannot exist. Artists have struggled to depict light for centuries. This challenge has both frustrated and delighted artists the world over. When we see a painting that captures a little of this mysterious quality we can celebrate the beauty of nature. But how to convey the illusion of light with only humble pigments and a brush?

The Idea for this DVD
An art student wanted to watch me paint an entire painting. She had completed my Learn to Paint With Impact course so she had a good idea of the fundamentals of painting. Now she wanted to get a better idea of how to put it all together in practice. With this idea I set about making a course that would go beyond the beginner stage. I wanted to dig deeper into how we need to use pigments to crate an illusion of light.

Disc 1
In the first DVD I focus on practical application of:

Colour mixing with a small palette of colours;
How to work on your palette to achieve interesting colours;
How to mix greys and other neutral colours that are so important for showing light;
How to understand that paint with its limitations needs to be used correctly in order to create an illusion of light.

This section of the course is not what you would typically find in a basic course or workshop. But it is the little things that make all the difference. Once these ideas take hold your will start to explore entirely new levels of painting.

Disc 2
In the second section I get into the painting demonstration. You get to see almost the entire painting step-by-step. The objective is:

To see how to bring your own vision to the painting based on a subject;
How to use brushwork;
How to apply colours that work in relationships to create illusions of light;
How to develop the shapes and add interest to the painting surface.

Who is the DVD for?
As I mentioned above this is not about how to start painting for the first time. I cover those aspects in detail in Learn to Paint With Impact. In this DVD I focus on the next steps for the enthusiastic artist who wants to explore further. If the practical issue of painting light landscapes with oils or acrylics attracts you then you will benefit from this DVD.
